About the Artist & Collection
Bio
Christian Casas (b. 1994) is a first-generation Cuban-American interdisciplinary artist, curator, and educator from Hialeah, Florida, based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Working primarily in handbuilt ceramics alongside sculpture, drawing, pyrography, printmaking, found materials, and installation, his practice explores intergenerational memory, grief, diaspora, labor, and the symbolic weight carried by objects. Drawing from family histories, devotional imagery, folk traditions, animation, and handmade craft processes, he creates fragmented environments that blur the line between archive, relic, and personal mythology.
Casas received an MFA in Visual Arts from The Ohio State University (2022) and a BA in English from the University of Florida (2017). His work has been exhibited in regional and national galleries, universities, museums, and community spaces. Alongside his studio practice, he is committed to education and public engagement through workshops, collaborative programming, and artist-led initiatives that expand access to interdisciplinary art-making and collective learning.
Artist Statement
My practice explores intergenerational memory, grief, diaspora, labor, and the symbolic weight carried by objects. Working across ceramics, sculpture, drawing, pyrography, printmaking, found materials, and installation, I create fragmented environments that blur the line between archive, relic, and personal mythology. I often pull from family histories, devotional imagery, folk traditions, animation, and handmade craft processes to examine how identity is shaped through inheritance, displacement, and remembrance.
Through repetition, accumulation, and nonlinear storytelling, I treat the gallery space as a site for emotional and material excavation. Small gestures, improvised forms, and intimate objects become vessels for navigating tenderness, protection, transformation, and loss. My installations often function as symbolic archives where humor, vulnerability, and cultural memory coexist, inviting viewers to move slowly through layered narratives that resist fixed interpretation.
Alongside my studio practice, I am deeply invested in accessibility and community engagement through education, collaborative programming, and artist-led initiatives that expand access to art-making and collective learning.
Talking to the Collection
For this collection with Memor, I set out to bring my ceramic practice into something people use every day. I start each design by hand-building a ceramic mosaic from shapes I cut out of a clay slab, then refine and glaze each one by hand. Every piece gets three to five layers of glaze, which lets the color, texture, and surface details develop during firing.
I’m drawn to the slow, repetitive process of making and how small, carefully crafted pieces can join to form something bigger. Turning these ceramic mosaics into phone cases keeps the look and feel of my studio work, and lets people carry a piece of that handmade process with them each day.
